Climax #1638, The Pacific Lumber Co. #33.
This 80-ton engine was the first Climax
delivered with piston valved cylinders, in fact, it was the first
geared locomotive built with piston valves as standard equipment,
something Shay and Heisler would not do for another 5 years. This
locomotive was built with the then standard arch bar trucks. Compared
to the complexity of the Willamette and Shay trucks, the Climax
design was engineered for simplicity. After assembling the model
Climax arch bar trucks, I have been very impressed with how Climax
was pushing the casting technology of the time in designing the cast
truck parts for a minimum of required machine work before assembly.
